The Joker

by Tommy D. Read by Sophia D.

It was almost 10 o’clock on a Saturday night when Carmelo finished playing his favorite video game, Fortnite, in the living room and was ready for bed.

Billy gave a big yawn before shutting off the console.

He lived in a small house and only had to walk maybe 10 feet from the living room to his bedroom down a long hallway.

Usually, Billy didn’t worry about walking down the hallway, even in the dark. But tonight, he felt weird.

Billy stopped at the end of the hallway and looked to see if anyone was there.

He didn’t see anyone but he felt eyes on him.

Billy went to turn on the light but then laughed at himself.

He was too big to be scared of the dark. So, Billy started walking down the hallway towards his room.

But Billy was sure there was something at the end of the hallway. He couldn’t make it out at first.

It looked just like a shadow. Then, as he got closer, he could see it.

It was a creepy joker.

He had a painted white face, bright red lips, and blue paint around his eyes. His hair was matted down by a giant joker hat. The tips had bells on them. He moved his head to the side. The bells jingled.

Billy stopped.

The creepy joker looked up at him with that creepy smile. It was smaller than him, but still creepy!

The creepy joker said, “I am bombing people with candy.”

Billy couldn’t believe his ears. He was real!

All Billy managed to say was, “Why are you doing this?”

The creepy joker let out a high-pitched evil laugh.

Then he turned around and vanished into a portal.

The portal looked just like the end of the hallway.

But the wall seemed to move a little. Billy stepped closer to get a better look. To check if any of this was real.

He inched closer…and closer…and—

He was sucked in!

Billy went through the portal and landed in New York City.

He saw that evil joker swinging from one building to the next, bombing everyone with candy!

The streets exploded, right and left.

At that moment, Billy knew he had to do something. Billy started to run.

But something was wrong.

His feet weren’t touching the ground!

He could fly!

Billy flew after the creepy joker as fast as he could. And just as he was about to grab him—he woke up. Billy woke up on the couch surrounded by wrappers.

He must have fallen asleep after eating some candy.

Billy shut off the T.V. and walked towards his bedroom.

What a relief! It was just a dream! Billy thought to himself.

But just before Billy got to his door, he was sure he could the sound of small bells jingling behind him.
